The Story of the Escudo – Cape Verde’s Shield of Value Long before Cape Verde gained independence, its people traded with Portuguese coins, using a currency called the real. But as tides shifted and colonial structures changed, a new form of money began to circulate — the escudo. The escudo was first introduced in Portugal in 1911, replacing the real after the monarchy fell. Just a few years later, in 1914, it made its way to the islands of Cape Verde, still under Portuguese rule. For decades, Cape Verdeans used the Portuguese escudo, tied directly to the motherland's economy and policies. But in 1975, Cape Verde gained its independence, and with freedom came the need for a symbol of self-reliance. That moment came in 1977, when the country launched its very own currency — the Cape Verdean escudo (CVE).
